You see, the thing is that Bernard Cribbins is a national treasure, and most Americans know little or nothing about him. Yeah, he was in a couple films you might have seen, and you know about the whole Right Said Fred thing, but that’s about it.

So Americans are going “Who is this magnificent man and how can I adopt him?” and the Brits are all, “Yep, that’s our Bernard”.

It is surely one of his finest dramatic performances, even more so that he’s so connected to comedy.  He deserved every accolade he got for this role.  So SO many of his lines were ad-libs, like “D’yer wanna swap?”
