That's a quote from Axel himself , so Tom please tell us all again how Marvel doesn't "pander" to the movie audience ? So it doesn't Matter the history of Marvel or the continuity of Marvel or the 616 where Secret Wars is taking place, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS WATCH MARVEL MOVIES. really? But then we're the crazy fans right?

Clarity isn’t pandering. Telling a story in a manner that anybody can understand it and enjoy it is simply exercising good craft.

You draw an arbitrary line between “us” and “them”, when you’re all on the same side and standing in teh same place.

ANY superhero should be able to be explained clearly at a high-concept level while traveling in an elevator.  Going into the history in more detail will take longer, but you should be able to get the basic concept down in seconds.

“This guy gets spider powers from a radioactive spider, and he realizes he has to help people after his uncle is killed by a guy he couldn’t be bothered to stop”. Boom. Done.

After that, all that needs doing is a bit of catch-up on the current storyline.  The first page in most Marvel titles does that just fine.

Trying to get more people to read comics is not “pandering”.  You start with a starter kit of facts and information, and amass the rest as you go, like picking up dust and crumbs when you shuffle across the floor in your socks. You didn’t start knowing all the history of the MU, you picked it up as you went along.

Do you also go to the theaters and ask trivia questions of the theatergoers so you know if they “deserve” to watch the film?
