punkrockandspider-man asked: Lord forbid this ever happen, but if DC or Marvel were to go under would the surviving company be able to purchase the other company's character rights and continue publishing stories with their characters? I can't imagine a world without Batman or Spider-man.

I don’t think so, no. There’s no way that DC’s parent company is ever going to part with the rights to Batman—it’s far too valuable a piece of intellectual property even if you’re not publishing the character in comic books to part with it. And the same thing is true of Spider-Man.

I certainly agree it wouldn’t happen TODAY, because businesses have so much better an understanding of intellectual properly and the money that can be made from licensing.
