akirakan asked: Hi Tom! Lately I've been having a obsession with toku series, specially Super Sentai. I discovered that Marvel co-produced the series Battle Fever J and in the recent Spider-Verse panel at C2E2 they stressed that they would only use versions that Marvel has control, and among those characters there was Supaidaman, so I was wondering, can you still use the BFJ characters? If so I'd love to see Battle Japan teaming up with Captain America!
I’m not 100% certain, but I don’t believe that Marvel has any rights to the BATTLE FEVER J characters or episodes at this point.
But we do to SUPAIDAMAN. Change, Leopardon!
Battle Fever J does have a copyright note for “M.C.G.” (Marvel Comics Group, presumably) but Heaven only knows where they stand now. Toei clear uses them often (Most recently in Gokaiger) so their portion of the rights are surely in place. Odds are Marvel could claim the rights to Miss America, or at least the name.
If Disney really wanted to, they could argue they own at least a part of the Super Sentai series entirely, since marvel helped tweak the formula with BF J. But I doubt they’d want to bother - they had the Power Rangers series in their hands, and dropped it.
